How to Keep Your CPU Cool: The Different Types of CPU Heat Sinks
2022-09-16

There are several different types of CPU heat sinks, and each one has its own set of benefits and drawbacks. In this post, we'll take a look at the different types of CPU heat sinks and see which one is right for you.

There are three basic types of CPU heat sinks, active heat sinks, passive heat sinks, and heat pipes.

CPU Heat sinks

Active heat sinks

An active heatsink refers to a heatsink with a means of moving air, usually a fan. This type of heatsink usually has a metal component that makes contact with the hardware that needs to be cooled. The metal unit is attached to a fan that moves hot air away from the unit. Most often seen on computer processing unit (CPU) chips, the active heatsink is the most commonly used type of heatsink in personal computers.

One of the benefits of using an active heat sink is that it can help keep your computer running cooler, which can extend the life of your CPU.

Passive heat sinks

Passive heat sinks are those that don't rely on forced air flow (fans) and are considered more reliable than active solutions. It works by using a fan to draw air over the fins, which then cools down the CPU.

But if you're looking for something basic that'll keep your CPU cool without breaking the bank, a passive heat sink is a good option.

Heat pipes

When it comes to heat dissipation, heat pipes are one of the most popular methods. They work by using evaporation and condensation to move heat away from the CPU.

Here's how it works: the heat pipe is filled with a liquid, and when the CPU gets too hot, the liquid starts to evaporate. This vapor rises to the cooler part of the pipe, where it condenses and releases its heat. Then the liquid falls back to the hot part of the pipe, and the cycle starts all over again.

Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to choose the one that will work best for your needs.

For example, a heat sink is a good option if you want to keep your CPU cool without spending too much money, but it can't handle as much heat as a heat pipe or water cooling system.
